This is a quick and brief post about some stuff which has appeared to have slipped under my radar or has been released recently

Some amazing stuff here from some of my favorite artists

First up - Kelpe with a track from his new EP, which I would highly recommend to you all

Followed swiftly by James Blake and his beautiful and haunting music, hopefully this is the future of the sub bass that has been a bit abused over the last wee while

Last but not least we have some new FlyLo, again this is another EP I would recommend getting a hold of

The songs here speak for themselves, don't really need to say much else, hopefully this will become a weekly post but i'm not promising anything !

IDM & My Love Of The Plain Different

Right, I love IDM and lots of Electronic music in general and have recently discovered some gems that I need to share with you.

'Lassi Pekka Nikko'aka 'Brothomstates' was signed to WARP in 2001, he was a main player in early 'Demoscene' (see wiki) music producing under the name 'Dune' and as part of the group 'Orange', his music was used on the Sprite 3G advert, you know the one where the gremlin gives birth on a bus.

He hasn't released much in the last while, but I could quite happily listen to his album Qtio over again and again, loosely downtempo ambient but drawing alot of influence in the drum programming from IDM and the Demoscene style.

Check out his stuff and show support, this is a song from the album 'Claro'

Some female action now, 'Mira Calix' is another WARP Records artist, she released her first single 'Humba' on WARP in 1996, she has toured with Godspeed You Black Emperor, Radiohead and has occasionally supported Richard D James.

This woman has produced some phenominal electronic tracks and has also made some beautiful commissions such as 2009's 'Chorus' by United Visual Artists. see pictures of the install on their website, its astounding.

Anyway getting sidetracked here is some of the visuals for her live show and a nice track of her's to accompany it, enjoy

Audio Digest - My Ears Right Now

Right some stuff which has been playing a lot of late whenever I seem to be near to my iPod or Laptop, hope you enjoy these tracks, i've been working hard on new material but I have zero inspiration right now, a journey to some corner of the earth that is uninhabited would be ideal but got stuff going on so sadly that's out the question.

I'm getting big influences just now for what I want to make from a variety of artists but can't seem to create the sound that i'm picturing in my head :( sad times, anyway this is just a quick entry really with a few artists for you to check out and let your ears enjoy.

First up Funki Porcini who is signed to NinjaTune and has released soon absolutly beautiful music, I find similarities to Bonobo but it's quite unique aswell in its own right the type of music, it's hard to convey exactly the style, it's easier for you to listen yourself.

As metioned above here's some Bonobo for you since it's been a while since i've posted up any, brilliant downtempo jazzy stuff, I would highly recommend their newest album 'Black Sands' if your a fan of the style.

Next one probably won't be everyone's cup of tea but it's been getting played on last.fm every time i've been on in the last while, can't really find a lot of information on Mechanical Me apart from they were signed to Lumenessence and are now on an "extended sabbatical". Beautiful, haunting yet somehow familiar, have a listen and see what you think.

Finally we have TM Juke with his unique brand of lo-fi downtempo soulful hip-hop, this is probably the closest to where I want to be musically at this time, not gonna write anything else about this at this time, just listen and absorb it !

Film and Music

Been trying to avoid writing this Blog entry cause it's a dangerous one for me where I could wander around in circles and blabber wasteful nonsense, so i'll try keep it under control and just do a simple Top 5 of my personal favorites and a couple lines about why. This is not Soundtracks as in various artists compiled together to make a soundtrack but original compositions written specifically for the film in context.

In at 5 we have the amazing talents of Max Steiner and the film 'Gone With The Wind'

The reason for this I don't really know, it just seems to hit a nerve in my body and makes me smile when I hear the compostions from this film, it was however a tough call between this and 'Casablanca' which was also scored by Max Steiner.

And at 4 we have Ennio Morricone and 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly'

Mainly for this one song but amazing overall, Ennio Morricone is one of my idols and this is some of his best stuff, sampled at various points across time including Gorillaz on Clint Eastwood, which is good enough for me

Number 3 is Max Richter and 'Waltz with Bashir'

The whole soundtrack wasn't all Max Richter it included OMD and PiL but it's the original compositions that make me stand in awe beautiful soundscapes which complement the beauty of this film perfectly. The definition of 'awe' somes up everything about this one - noun, an overwhelming feeling of reverence, admiration, fear, etc., produced by that which is grand, sublime, extremely powerful

Number 2 is headed up by Clint Mansell and 'MOON'

Now this was a tough one cause it could have easily been 'Requiem for a Dream' headed up by 'Lux Aeterna' which is a beautiful piece of music however as an overall package 'MOON' just slightly takes the gold.

And last but no least

Number 1 is the most electronic and still astounds me with the complexity of it, The Dust Brothers and 'Fight Club'

Never have I felt so strongly that a soundtrack can seriously influence a film than this example, this is probably very biased from my point of view but then again this is my list and not yours, thats why there is a comment box at the bottom !

Dust Brothers made this film for me with the subtle ambient tracks and the up tempo tracks when required, the scene in which Ed Norton is browsing the Ikea catalogue whilst one the toilet then the Ikea Scene shows that music can influence how you are being led through a scene. Can't find a good copy, go watch the DVD enjoy it and enjoy the music throughout !

Chilled DnB

Well back again with another wee piece on chilled DnB and Intelligent Drum n Bass, this is not to say other DnB is stupid, but it takes alot of influences from the IDM genre associated with the likes of Squarepusher, Aphex Twin etc.

There is so many artists and acts in this style which I could talk about but very few that actually send a tingle down my spine like the one's which I shall mention.

So here we go, first up in the form of Swedish producer SEBA, with a big big song from 2005, which I cannot get out my head, entitled 'Move On' it features 'Paradox on co-production and Robert Manos on Vocal duties, perfect floating beautiful DnB.

Next up we have two young Estonians, Andrus Kurvits aka Q-Brick and Markus Marjak aka Zero Frequency, collectively are known as Indivision, they make soulful and at points trancey DnB. I would recommend alot of their tracks but 'Final Departure' stands out when listened to. Alot of their stuff is also free which is a nice bonus.

Last but not least we have an Irish producer by the name of Calibre, a classically trained violinist who has been on the radar since around 1998 when picked up by Dublin label Quadrophonic, he creates a soundscape around the typical DnB style instead of the regular run of the mill sound, this has led to many things including getting big praise from Radio 1's Fabio who released his 2001 double album 'Musique Concrete' on his label 'Creative Source'. Further collaborations with Manchester based artists Marcus Intalex and ST Files under the name Mist:i:Cal. Singing big praises for this young man. I could post up loads of video's of his work but check out 'Past Imperfect Future' then wander around the related links to see what i'm talking about.

Future Garage

Right i've been listening to a weird amalgamation of styles today and have come across one that is making me smile quite alot more than your average bear, it's not dubstep, it's not garage, it's not bassline and it's not house but takes influences from all of the above, I like and hate classifying music probably equally, yet I feel this is the best way of describing it, 'Future Garage'.

In a world where jacking house, pummeling techno and broken dubstep variants are evolving at a frenetic pace, I find this style is very nice to listen to and absorb.

Some artists touching into this style you'll probably know some you won't, so here we go with a little list of my favorites and a few youtube links as most of these tunes are copyrighted tightly, and I don't like taking away from any artists possible earnings, so get on Juno and Beatport and support these artists !

Firstly we have 23Hz & Numaestro - Praise Dub a beautiful 5 mins of carribean soca combined with a wicked bassline and some broken beats, warm !

Next up is Untold with his B-Side to 'Kingdom' called 'Purify', this brings back some of the beautiful wobble that i've been enjoying recently with some great percussive elements.

Now to the really housey end of things we have Julio Bashmore who right now i'm pretty convinced is my favorite artist out there currently alongside Martyn, amazing things coming from this man would recommend any of his tunes but this is a standout for me with a wicked bassline that's very european sounding, reminds me of BookaShade and M.A.N.D.Y, tunes called 'Footsteppin'' this is a must have song.

Finally opposite end of the spectrum we have Deadboy, a unique style from this man and another personal favorite of mine, chip style elements compliment the song rather than taking away from it as so many chiptunes tend to do, i.e I feel like i'm trapped in Atari, fuck this shit, when done properly it can lead to great results, cheers Deadboy, this ones called 'U Cheated' and is a belter.

UK Funky

One style is brightening up my world right now UK Funky, its a kinda weird blend of house and dubstep, kinda meets half way to beautiful results.

Alot of the rising stars of the UK Garage/Grime/Bassline/Dubstep scene are leaning towards a newer evolution called UK Funky, not to be confused with Funky House which is probably the most commercial form of house music, i.e found on every Hed Kandi Mix and alot of Ministry of Sounds Mixes especially the Ibiza branded one's.

UK Funky takes production values from many different shades of UK Garage music and blends them, at a standard House Music tempo, with more tribal style percussion and wobble.

There are many different takes on this genre, including producers such as Apple, Lil Silva, Roska and Scratcha DVA, who have a harder, more syncopated sound, and other producers aiming for a more commercial, RNB friendly audience, such as Crazy Cousinz.

Firstly I want to say sorry for being such a lazy shit bag, I have received your emails I have listened to most of the tracks i've been sent, not all but most of them and all I can really say is that not alone is it laziness# think thats how you spell it, but its also a supreme lack of decent music kicking about right now, my love of fidget and electro is waining due to the fact that it all sounds re-god dam-dicoulosly the same now, although don't get me wrong there is still some gems out there, since I last posted, the main two that I can safely say seem to have been consistent are, 'Heads Will Roll (A-Track Remix) by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and also a Mr Boris Dlugosch with a little song called 'Bangkok', I have been listening to alot wider spectrum of music of late and have discovered some gems which I will write about over the course of the next week or two or three, however long it takes really, anywho's keep your eyes peeled.

Not much is happening on the blogosphere today so thought I would write about a personal enjoyment of mine which is the mini kinda podcasts that Mike Skinner has started posting up on his blog.

From what started as a mini TV series has turned into an enjoyable half hour approx. of music that he is enjoying right now, some absolute gems are found regularly on his old podcasts and continues with the new beat stevie podcast.

I'd highly recommend heading over to www.skinnermike.com and having a listen to them, they also include some intellectual discussions about dolphins ruling London and various assortments of whatever is on their minds at the time.

I have a few things in the inbox to talk about but will get to them over the next week

Lucky Me Collective

LuckyMe started in Spring 2002 they were running parties at the Glasgow School of Art and Stereo and in their own words "simply, we weren't trying to do something innovative and different."

They did and its very bloody good.

In 2007 they started the label and artist collective that exists today, the two stand outs on their current artists roster are 'Hudson Mohawke' and 'Rustie', with both having secured album deals with WARP and released numerous singles and EP's on various other labels.

Also involved in the LuckyMe collective are a various assortment of talented artists including 'The Blessings' and 'Respite', check out their website for more.

Being from Scotland its good to see some of our own nationals making a big impact on the international stage, I want to focus on 'Rustie' and 'Hudson Mo', firstly both make very interesting music !

'Hudson Mo' has that wobbly, dub-hop sound that has become synonymous with Flying Lotus et al. which I absolutely love and I cannot wait for a much anticipated album release, however till then I would recommend getting your hands on 'Polyfolk Dance', his 6 track EP.

Rustie is similar but less analogue, digital/glitch-hop is probably as close as I can get to explaining it, just go listen to him, also signed to WARP and hopefully full album soon, song 'Clipper'is my personal favorite for the head nodding bass drum and nice poly synths that have been layered on top to compliment it beautifully.

BreakThru Radio Blogger of the Week part II

Due to my own stupidity and being exceptionally busy I missed my deadline for handing in stuff twice so will be at a future date that I will be the Blogger of the Week.

Here's the next installment of some musical discussion for you all.

Having sat and watched 'kidulthood' and also 'adulthood' within the last 24 hours i'm going to have a wee discussion about Grime, Bassline and generally anything featured in the films which I enjoyed, to start with 'kidulthood'.

Running through the OST in order, the first track that I come to which stands out is the song 'Stay Positive' by 'The Streets', what a song can't say enough to praise it and you've probably all heard it before at some point, if not check it out.

The next song which grabbed me was an outstanding track by 'The Angel' listening back to it now makes me think of 'Burial' again its such a good song which slipped under my radar till I went back and watched the film again and said woah what is that song.

The final song which seems to be haunting me right now is the song entitled 'All Things To All Men' by 'The Cinematic Orchestra' featuring 'Roots Manuva' this seriously is a beautiful piece of music, it encapsulates the moments of feeling down and out perfectly.

The rest of the soundtrack is pretty amazing also if you like your UK Hip-Hop and Grime with songs by 'Wiley', 'SWAY', 'Plan-B' and 'Klashnekoff'.

Now for 'adulthood', along the same lines lets run through the OST logically, the first song which for some reason grabbed me instatly was 'End In The Streets' by 'Plan B', what a song, literally from the off you are faced with a heavy heavy bass beat then a screeching synth line and a wobbly bassline. Plan-B is on great form as per usual with a great Rap through the whole song.

I don't really know why the next one stands out much to me, 'Bars Of Truth' by 'NoLay' reminds of some really old school Hip-Hop and Rap from America and has some of the best raps from a woman who has a unique style and voice which will definitely not be everyone's cup of tea but personally I really like it.

I only picked three songs from 'kidulthood' but i'm gonna go with more for 'adulthood', the next song by a relatively unknown artist called 'Kerry-Anne Leatham' is a beautiful acoustic track, she really has one of the most beautifully honest and painful voices I have heard in a song, similairties to 'Kate Nash' when she writes her slower songs but a nicer voice. This song should have got alot more exposure than it did.

Finally the last individual song I want to talk about is a song called 'Reach' by an artist called 'Skrein' I had never heard of this artist but will definitely be keeping tabs on future developments in this young mans career. Combination of great electronic piano, electric guitar melody which catches you straight away and a looped almost Breakbeat drum beatmake this a very listenable song and the lyrics cast a good personal experience about whats being talked about.

In terms of films I personally prefer 'kidulthood' but this is a music discussion and I really don't know which one I prefer, each has great songs, and represent the trend in music that was going on when the films came out, the 'adulthood' soundtrack is probably slightly easier to listen through, but I really cannot decide between the two the best thing I could recommend would be to listen yourself and then let me know.

Happy New Years

Heya pimps and pimpettes, Happy New Year to you all, hope 2009 is good to you.

Not really got much to say today except a quick chat about a label in Latvia called 'Elpa', really cannot say enough about the quality of the records that this label is putting out, they are an electronic music label aimed at the ambient electronic side of the musical spectrum but all class themselves as downtempo and IDM so they cover all bases of everything I personally love, the artists list is exceptionally strong would highly recommend anyone who Elpa pick up to be listened to, the list includes

Pink Logik
recoveryUnit and
TUTTY

These are my three personal favorites from Elpa.

Pink Logik is a Bristol based producer who is very similar to the likes of Autechre, Boards Of Canada with hints of various electronic influences notable in several songs, check out his LP sampler on his MySpace for an idea of what he's all about, has released records on Elpa, KultureShift and TerrainFlight. Check him out and give him support.

Next is recoveryUnit, who is based in Glasgow, and produces a more uptempo style more similar to Luke Vibert and Air without the Acid Tinged Jazz sounds of Vibert, but still retains the same quality, use of piano is excellent and could possibly be the best remix i've heard so far of 'reckoner' by Radiohead, the use of the Thom Yorke vocal running through a heavy compression is excellent, giving a very haunting sound. Please support this artist as I really believe there is a very bright future in this genre of music.

Last but not least we have TUTTY, i'm going to find this very hard to write mainly due to the fact that very little can actually be found out about, TUTTY. What I can tell you is that he is from Moscow, his name is Sergey Kulikov and he produces a very distinct style of music which verges on being unlistenable. I would describe TUTTY more as a Soundscape rather than Music, that is not a criticism and is very much a compliment. He uses sounds to create an aura and paints a picture with his sound. Has released on Gonglabel, Elpa and Chitamioq imprints.

Please support all these artists individually and also the label Elpa. I believe they have a bright future ahead and can't say enough about the standard of artists that they sign.

Merry Christmas

Hello peeps, hope you all had a lovely Christmas and Santa was good to you all, son of a butch only left me coal for the second year running, think it might be because I keep getting drunk on Christmas Eve.

I really haven't been up to much just chilling out back at home after got exams out of the way a couple weeks ago. Anywho enough about what i've been doing and on to what i've missed the last couple of weeks.

I have now got Torq and i'm trying to learn it slowly but surely getting there so much better than having a stupid MIDI controller, I feel vinyl under my fingers again and its never felt better.

Music wise i've not really been listening to anything new, listening to alot of Dubstep still and i've started to increase my collection of Dubstep songs. I've got a couple here for you.

First off we have a producer from Manchester who goes by the name of Zed Bias, the tracks he's putting out just now are somewhere between Dub and Afro-Beat/Jazz, would be like putting Mr Scruff into a room with Benga and letting them merge into something beautiful. Check them out here => Zed Bias.
I've included a song thats remixed by C-Code who is also a very good up and coming artist in his own right.

Secondly we have a classic from Benga and Coki with Geeneus on the remix. This song is simply sublime, very downtempo with great kind of afro carribean drum track with lots of cow bell and samba feel, to match the melody that gets stuck in your head for weeks. Heard the original dropped live by Benga himself and think the floor moved. Cracking tune from an excellent producer and great remix.

2 New Songs and New Mix

Hello ya'll i've been busy for the last couple days, i've finished another song and finally got the other one off the other PC see post below for details, I also finished the Christmas Party Mix for you all to enjoy, although FileFreak will only allow me to upload upto 50mb at one time so its only ripped at 96kbps.

Now for some details about the new songs: -

The first is called "Salugi" which is kinda Hip Hop/Electronic crossover don't really know how to describe it to be honest so just have a listen and see what you think.

The other is called "Elevium" and is probably the most mature sounding song I have made thus far, it is a techy, rave, hip hop crossover with elements of alot of different styles of music incorporated into one song. Again see what you think and leave as much feedback as possible.

Next purchase is going to be a nice Torq Connectiv setup as I have finally hit the end of my tether with the BCD-2000 and its serious inability to work with Vista.

I'm also investing in a Mini Kaoss Pad to bring some fun to the live environment and also for enhancing the production side of things.

On that note I have finished a new song although my other computer has decided that it wants to corrupt the reason file that is set up as the VST plug-in for Ableton. This is extremely frustrating cause it looks like i'm going to have to remake the whole Reason file to use with the Ableton file. Looked up the error on the internet and seemingly its a common problem if you accidently close the wrong window first even though Ableton is not meant to allow you to.

I'm DJing twice this week in Dundee and also in St Andrews both being a combination of progressive house and electro, probably with the odd bMore and Fidget side of things laced in about it.

Really don't know what to say about this artist rather than I am completly astounded by the amount of talent he possesses. Signed to 'Hydeout Productions' Record Label this guy has a very bright future.

It is a sound that is in the vein of sigur ros combined with the phenominal Nightmares on Wax, having not heard the whole album yet I can't comment on it but I have my copy on order just now, if you would wish to purchase the album it's available from Amazon Japan or Guinness Records.

He has also been nice enough to allow me to post up his remix of crosses by Jose Gonzalez which also samples the vocals of Missy Elliot, strange combination I know but an excellent song.

Seriously give this guy as much support as possible because he is a hidden gem just waiting to explode in this modern day when there is so much boring and mundane music out there.

This woman is blowing my world right now have always been into Dubstep and the darker experimental side but after listening to the last three weeks shows almost constantly, its now starting to turn into an obsession.

Alot of respect for the song choices and the fact that I have never heard a bad song played yet, the guests are always steller and the show opens up new alleyways to me every time I listen to it.

Just thought I would share with you whats happening in my music world right now, got a couple cheeky tracks for you guys but gotta get them green lighted by the artists first will post them up asap.

New Dundee label in its infancy has just appeared on the radar, DTH Records is a Dundee based label, looking for artists around Scotland to start with with the intention of broadening its horizons in future. Thus far there are a couple of artists who are possibly going to form the backbone of early releases with further details to follow. Will post up further details when available.

Welcome to KiD-A's Blog just to say welcome, here's three tracks for your audible pleasure, fire any songs you wish to be posted to smcb87@gmail.com and i'll try listen to them and post them if they're good enough, till then enjoy these few, Sam Sparro track is excellent i'm not a great fan of the original but this brings a dirty bassline sound to the song, the second track by SHITDISCO is an older song which has been redone this time by a guy I don't know called Goose but its awesome and being Scottish wanna support these guys as much as possible, the final track by the Mystery Jets is a guarenteed floor filler with a heavy dirty bassline to compliment the vocal track which is excellent.
